The old router is 10.0.32.1, our company wanted to implement a squid proxy to better monitor web traffic while at work, and if necessary block large time-wasters, IE Facebook.com. However, we've quickly realized that this change has played a mean prank on our Polycom SIP Phones. Occasionally our phones will not ring, the end recipient hears ringing (this is artificially created by our PBX) however the handset never rings. The ONLY thing that has changed in our network is the option routers line. So, Since all Polycom MAC addresses begin with 00:04:F2 would it be possible in DHCP to say any 00:04:F2:::* MAC addresses get option routers 10.0.32.1, and anything else must talk with our Gateway?

• Why do clients on Branch Sites insist on accessing SYSVOL on the HQ DC instead of the branches' RODC?

  I'm still scratching my head over this situation... You see, we have 3 RW DCs in the HQ, and 1 RODC on every branch sites (50+ locations). During startup, a script will pull in some files from \\example.com\SYSVOL\example.com\Common\Data But we have been experiencing bandwidth overload. A traffic analysis indicated that lots of clients in the Branch Sites were trying to access the SYSVOL located in the RW DCs. E.g.: If the RW DCs are 10.1.0.15, 10.2.0.15, and 10.3.0.15, and site 'X' has a subnet of 10.27.0.0/16 (with its RODC at 10.27.0.15), clients at site 'X' seem to insist on accessing \\10.1.0.15\SYSVOL or \\10.2.0.15\SYSVOL or \\10.3.0.15\SYSVOL; they seem to be ignoring the RODC completely. What is going on here? Where should I start investigating what went wrong? BTW, I'm already using DFS-R, and replication have been going on successfully; I can put a small 'canary' file on one of the RW DCs, and within minutes all the RODCs will have successfully replicated the 'canary' file.

• Cannot connect to Solaris Server when Oracle GoldenGate process uses the port

  I'm trying to test the Oracle goldengate to replicate data between two databases on the same server. So I installed two databases and two goldengate homes in the same machine. The goldengate processes are started from each home and they are responsible for the replication : Process from home 1 configured on port 7809 & process for home 2 configured on port 7810. For a successful replication, processes started from goldengate home 1 should communicate with processes started from goldengate home 2. But for some reasons, this is not happening. The goldengate log file has the following error : OGG-01223 Oracle GoldenGate Capture for Oracle, exthrr.prm: TCP/IP error 131 (Connection reset by peer). "Googling" for this error, it said that the connection occurred but the host terminated it. Tried to telnet the machine with the used port and it gave the following error: bash-3.00$ telnet 10.10.3.124 7810 Trying 10.10.3.124... Connected to 10.10.3.124. Escape character is '^]'. Connection to 10.10.3.124 closed by foreign host. Here the communication occurs but for only around 3 seconds then it is closed by the host, which is the same explanation of the above error in the goldengate log file. I tried to change the port but still the same error. The problem is happening only when the goldengate process is using the port. When other process is using the same port, I can telnet successfully.

• Multiple IP's using one NIC connectivity problem - Windows

  I have a frame relay network that is directly connected to a GPRS network. I also have a ADSL high speed network and recently I have been trying to achieve the following network configuration using windows 7 (Also tried XP) with no success to date. On one server I have two NIC's NIC1 I would like the following two static IP address's 10.0.1.110 and 10.0.1.200 the cisco router has a default gateway of 10.0.1.1 the ADSL is DHCP. NIC1 and the cisco router do not have access to the internet. NIC2 is setup for DHCP with a primary DNS and secondary DNS configured to enable internet connectivity. With NIC1 all incoming TCP connections are from IP address's starting with 10.192.x.x I cannot establish a TCP connection to both 10.0.1.110 and 10.0.1.200. Its either one or the other. I have a static route implemented in windows of: route -p 10.192.0.0 mask 255.255.0.0 10.0.1.1 metric 1 I have tried leaving out the gateway in the NIC1 and many other combinations with no success. Can anyone please help? What am I doing wrong?

  I am trying to follow "http://www.centos.org/docs/5/html/Deployment_Guide-en-US/ch-vpn.html#s1-ipsec-net2net" I have come up with the following On local router machine: in my ifcfg-ipsec0: ONBOOT=yes IKE_METHOD=PSK DSTGW=10.5.27.1 SRCGW=10.6.159.1 DSTNET=10.5.27.0/25 SRCNET=10.6.159.0/24 DST=205.X.X.X TYPE=IPSEC I have /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/keys-ipsec0 file in place. On Remote Machine in the cloud if have /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-ipsec1: TYPE=IPSEC ONBOOT=yes IKE_METHOD=PSK SRCGW=10.5.27.1 DSTGW=10.6.159.1 SRCNET=10.5.27.124/25 DSTNET=10.6.159.0/24 DST=38.x.x.x with its respective /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/key-ipsec1 file. The DST in both cases are NAT'd external IPs. Is that a problem? I have made changes for port forwarding as well. When I try to bring the interfaces up it gives me output "RTNETLINK answers: Invalid argument". I am confused now and don't know what more to do? Any place I can digup what parameters were wrong? • Connecting 2 different subnet masks

  I'm no network genius, but I have managed to get most things running. I get confused about subnets and gateways though. We have an office server connected to around 20 PC's that all communicate fine. We have just gotten a cutting machine that won't connect to our network. The server has DHCP, but that fails on the cutting machine, so I've been trying to set the IP manually. Server details are as follows: IP: 10.1.1.12 SUBNET: 255.255.255.0 GATEWAY: 10.1.1.1 Internet connection is via the modem which is 10.1.1.1 An office PC is ussually set up through DHCP and has the following settings: IP: 10.1.1.36 SUBNET: 255.255.255.0 GATEWAY: 10.1.1.1 PRIMARY DNS: 10.1.1.12 Cutting Machine computer has 2 network ports. 1 is specifically for the communication between the PC and the cutting machine. It's details must be as follows: IP: 10.100.100.2 SUBNET: 255.255.255.252 GATEWAY: BLANK The other network port need to connect to the server. I was told that the IP and SUBNET need to be as follows: IP: 10.100.100.1 SUBNET: 255.255.255.252 GATEWAY: ?? How can I connect this port to the server and/or the internet. If anyone can offer assistance, it would really be appreaciated.

• How do you change a Cisco ASA 5510 management interface?

  I want to add a redundant interface to my Cisco ASA 5510. The management interface is currently using Ethernet0/1 (10.1.25.254/24) one of the interface I want to use for the redundant interfaces. So I wanted to setup Management0/0 as the new management interface. The other interface I want to use is Ethernet0/2 (10.1.0.254/24) for the redundant interface. The Ethernet0/3 (10.1.251.5/24) interface is not going to be part of the redundant interface. I gave the Management0/0 an IP address of 10.1.254.5, and was able to connect a win7 box to Management0/0 and use 10.1.254.5 as a gateway; and ping another address on the (10.1.251.0/24) network, but I can't ping the interface (10.1.254.5) itself. I also can't use ASDM/SSH to log onto the ASA at 10.1.254.5. I setup rules in Configuration Device Management Management Access ASDM/HTTPS/Telnet/SSH. That look like the original rules for the Ethernet0/1 interface. The last thing I can think to try would be to change the Configuration Device Management Management Access Management Interface. I'm a bit nervous about changing it, the description of it is a bit vague. What it's going to do if I change it? What is the correct way to change a management interface?

• D-LINK DIR-615 router keeps giving my wireless devices bad ip addresses

  I have a D-LINK DIR-615 router, and wired devices have no problem getting an IP, however; wireless devices end up with a 169.254.. address (subsequently, they cannot access the internet through the router). I have removed all wired connections from the router, so there is no other dhcp server running. I've also gone back to the store, and replaced it with another, thinking that maybe it was defective. According to the router, it gave 192.168.0.101 to the wireless device. According to the wireless device it got 169.254.67.71. I've tried both a laptop and an iPod Touch, both exhibit the same behaviour. Has anyone seen this type of behaviour, or have any ideas of stuff to try? • Port mirroring on multiple switches

  So here is the deal, I have a server on switch A where port 3 is monitoring traffic for most of the ports on switch A. However I have other users on switch B that needs to have port 3 on switch A monitor as well. Is this possible? I have been reading about rspan but doesnt seem to work. Switch A: monitor session 1 source interface fast0/1 - 2 monitor session 1 source interface fast0/4 - 46 monitor session 1 destination interface fast0/3 (this works great for switch A, I need a solution to get switch B to also have some ports sent to port 3 on switch A for monitoring.) Onxx, All the traffic on switch A is fine, there will be about 10-15 ports on switch B that I need to send to fa0/3 on switch A as the destination. I have the switches connected with a ethernet cable with a trunk port on both switches on port 48 on switch B and A and port 47 on A connects to our sonicwall. So I am assuming they are daisy chained? What if I did the following: Switch A monitor session 1 source interface fast0/1 - 2 monitor session 1 source interface fast0/4 - 46 monitor session 1 destination interface fast0/3 Put all of the ports on vlan 10 because I made an rspan vlan 10 On switch B monitor the ports I need will say 1-10 monitor session 1 source interface fast0/1 - 10 monitor session 1 destination remote vlan 10 as a prerequisite I would have created vlan 10 as a rspan vlan on switch B. Switch A Monitor session 1 destination remote vlan 10 Would this work? By the way I am working with cisco catalyst 3560 switches.

  My setup: Private network vboxnet1 10.0.7.0/24 1 Host, ubuntu desktop 1 VM, ubuntu server (VirtualBox) Adressing layout: HOST: 10.0.7.1 VM: 10.0.7.101 VM MAC NAMESPACE: 10.0.7.102 On the VM, I ran the following commands: ip netns add mac # create a new nmespace ip link add link eth0 mac0 type macvlan # create a new macvlan interface ip link set mac0 netns mac On the mac namespace, inside the VM: ip link set lo up ip link set mac up ip addr add 10.0.7.102/24 dev mac0 So that we basically end up with: (Like Inception ?) +------------------------+ | Host: 10.0.7.1 | | | | +--------------------+ | | | VM: 10.0.7.101 | | | | | | | | +----------------+ | | | | | NS: 10.0.7.102 | | | | | | | | | | | +----------------+ | | | +--------------------+ | +------------------------+ What works: Ping between Host and VM Ping between NS and NS dhclient from NS What does not work: ping between NS and VM ping between NS and Host Where I started to go nuts: tcpdump on host (the real machine) actually shows ARP request AND replies tcpdump on NS shows ARP requests sent to the host tcpdump on VM makes the whole mess work (!) -- ping starts to get answers when tcpdump is started on the VM ?!? So, I bet you were eager for it, my question is: how to I make it work ? I suspect something's wrong with ARP on the macvlan inside the NS but can't figure out what exactly... Btw, I did the same expérimentations with the mac0 interface directly on the VM (no namespace) and it worked flawlessly.

• Asterisk relay between multiple subnets

  I wonder what's the best way to go when you have phones on multiple networks which are not directly reachable. I have 3 networks 10.3.x.x 10.6.x.x 10.17.x.x My asterisk server resides on the 10.3.0.5 IP. The machines from the 10.6 and 10.17 networks are routed here through VPN tunnels. At this point we don't talk about NAT anywhere on the network just pure routing. Since the 10.3.0.5 PBX has routes back to all the subnet's it has no problem to communicate with softphones/hardphones from these ranges. The problem comes from that Asterisk (as far as I understand) only responsible for the SIP communication part not the Audio/Video transmission which is in P2P fashion done between the devices. So although a client using sipdroid from 10.6.x.x is able to connect to the pbx (10.3.0.5) and dial a bria client on the 10.17.x.x network once the phone rings out and the call establishes no audio will be transmitted simply because it has no way to directly connect there. For this there are multiple solutions described in this text: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee480411%28v=winembedded.60%29.aspx What I would prefer is to keep these networks segregated as they are now. What would be the best solution? Is it possible to actually relay through all the audio/video information through the Asterisk server? That would be the best in my case, I using Astlinux there which has a lot of other parts. Thanks

• Very high CPU and low RAM usage - is it possible to place some of swap some of the CPU usage to the RAM (with CloudLinux LVE Manager installed)?

  I had to install CloudLinux so that I could somewhat controle the CPU ussage and more importantly the Concurrent-Connections the Websites use. But as you can see the Server load is way to high and thats why some sites take up to 10 sec. to load! Server load 22.46 (8 CPUs) (!) Memory Used 36.32% (2,959,188 of 8,146,632) (ok) Swap Used 0.01% (132 of 2,104,504) (ok) Server: 8 x Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E31230 @ 3.20GHz Memory: 8143680k/9437184k available (2621k kernel code, 234872k reserved, 1403k data, 244k init) Linux Yesterday: Total of 214,514 Page-views (Awstat) Now my question: Can I shift some of the CPU usage to the RAM? • STORED PROCEDURE working in my local test machine cannot be created in production environment.

  Hi, I have an SQL CREATE PROCEDURE statement that runs perfectly in my local SQL Server, but cannot be recreated in production environment. The error message I get in production is Msg 102, Level 15, State 1, Incorrect syntax near '='. It is a pretty big query and I don't want to annoy StackOverflow users, but I simply can't find a solution. If only you could point me out what settings I could check in the production server in order to enable running the code... I must be using some kind of syntax or something that is conflicting with some setting in production. This PROCEDURE was already registered in production before, but when I ran a DROP - CREATE PROCEDURE today, the server was able to drop the procedure, but not to recreate it. There are a variety of tools available to help you and Support diagnose SOA Suite issues in 11g but it can be confusing as to which tool is appropriate for a particular situation and what their relationships are. • Service Discovery in WCF 4.0 &ndash; Part 1

  When designing a service oriented architecture (SOA) system, there will be a lot of services with many service contracts, endpoints and behaviors. Besides the client calling the service, in a large distributed system a service may invoke other services. In this case, one service might need to know the endpoints it invokes. This might not be a problem in a small system. But when you have more than 10 services this might be a problem. For example in my current product, there are around 10 services, such as the user authentication service, UI integration service, location service, license service, device monitor service, event monitor service, schedule job service, accounting service, player management service, etc..   Benefit of Discovery Service Since almost all my services need to invoke at least one other service. This would be a difficult task to make sure all services endpoints are configured correctly in every service. And furthermore, it would be a nightmare when a service changed its endpoint at runtime. Hence, we need a discovery service to remove the dependency (configuration dependency). A discovery service plays as a service dictionary which stores the relationship between the contracts and the endpoints for every service. By using the discovery service, when service X wants to invoke service Y, it just need to ask the discovery service where is service Y, then the discovery service will return all proper endpoints of service Y, then service X can use the endpoint to send the request to service Y. And when some services changed their endpoint address, all need to do is to update its records in the discovery service then all others will know its new endpoint. In WCF 4.0 Discovery it supports both managed proxy discovery mode and ad-hoc discovery mode. In ad-hoc mode there is no standalone discovery service. When a client wanted to invoke a service, it will broadcast an message (normally in UDP protocol) to the entire network with the service match criteria. All services which enabled the discovery behavior will receive this message and only those matched services will send their endpoint back to the client. The managed proxy discovery service works as I described above. In this post I will only cover the managed proxy mode, where there’s a discovery service. For more information about the ad-hoc mode please refer to the MSDN.   Service Announcement and Probe The main functionality of discovery service should be return the proper endpoint addresses back to the service who is looking for. In most cases the consume service (as a client) will send the contract which it wanted to request to the discovery service. And then the discovery service will find the endpoint and respond. Sometimes the contract and endpoint are not enough. It also contains versioning, extensions attributes. This post I will only cover the case includes contract and endpoint. When a client (or sometimes a service who need to invoke another service) need to connect to a target service, it will firstly request the discovery service through the “Probe” method with the criteria. Basically the criteria contains the contract type name of the target service. Then the discovery service will search its endpoint repository by the criteria. The repository might be a database, a distributed cache or a flat XML file. If it matches, the discovery service will grab the endpoint information (it’s called discovery endpoint metadata in WCF) and send back. And this is called “Probe”. Finally the client received the discovery endpoint metadata and will use the endpoint to connect to the target service. Besides the probe, discovery service should take the responsible to know there is a new service available when it goes online, as well as stopped when it goes offline. This feature is named “Announcement”. When a service started and stopped, it will announce to the discovery service. So the basic functionality of a discovery service should includes: 1, An endpoint which receive the service online message, and add the service endpoint information in the discovery repository. 2, An endpoint which receive the service offline message, and remove the service endpoint information from the discovery repository. 3, An endpoint which receive the client probe message, and return the matches service endpoints, and return the discovery endpoint metadata. WCF 4.0 discovery service just covers all these features in it's infrastructure classes.   Discovery Service in WCF 4.0 WCF 4.0 introduced a new assembly named System.ServiceModel.Discovery which has all necessary classes and interfaces to build a WS-Discovery compliant discovery service. It supports ad-hoc and managed proxy modes. For the case mentioned in this post, what we need to build is a standalone discovery service, which is the managed proxy discovery service mode. To build a managed discovery service in WCF 4.0 just create a new class inherits from the abstract class System.ServiceModel.Discovery.DiscoveryProxy. This class implemented and abstracted the procedures of service announcement and probe. And it exposes 8 abstract methods where we can implement our own endpoint register, unregister and find logic. These 8 methods are asynchronized, which means all invokes to the discovery service are asynchronously, for better service capability and performance. 1, OnBeginOnlineAnnouncement, OnEndOnlineAnnouncement: Invoked when a service sent the online announcement message. We need to add the endpoint information to the repository in this method. 2, OnBeginOfflineAnnouncement, OnEndOfflineAnnouncement: Invoked when a service sent the offline announcement message. We need to remove the endpoint information from the repository in this method. 3, OnBeginFind, OnEndFind: Invoked when a client sent the probe message that want to find the service endpoint information. We need to look for the proper endpoints by matching the client’s criteria through the repository in this method. 4, OnBeginResolve, OnEndResolve: Invoked then a client sent the resolve message. Different from the find method, when using resolve method the discovery service will return the exactly one service endpoint metadata to the client. In our example we will NOT implement this method.   Let’s create our own discovery service, inherit the base System.ServiceModel.Discovery.DiscoveryProxy. We also need to specify the service behavior in this class. WCF discovery service gives us full flexibility to implement the endpoint add, remove and find logic. For the demo purpose we will use an internal dictionary to store the services’ endpoint metadata. In the next post we will see how to serialize and store these information in database. As you can see there are two endpoints listening for announcement message and probe message.   Discoverable Service and Client Next, let’s create a WCF service that is discoverable, which means it can be found by the discovery service. To do so, we need to let the service send the online announcement message to the discovery service, as well as offline message before it shutdown. Just create a simple service which can make the incoming string to upper. We need to add a special service behavior so that it could send the online and offline message to the discovery service announcement endpoint when the host is opened and closed. WCF 4.0 introduced a service behavior named ServiceDiscoveryBehavior. In short, it injected the channel open and close procedure and send the online and offline message to the announcement endpoint.   On client side, when we have the discovery service, a client can invoke a service without knowing its endpoint. WCF discovery assembly provides a class named DiscoveryClient, which can be used to find the proper service endpoint by passing the criteria. In the code below I initialized the DiscoveryClient, specified the discovery service probe endpoint address. Then I created the find criteria by specifying the service contract I wanted to use and invoke the Find method. This will send the probe message to the discovery service and it will find the endpoints back to me. The discovery service will return all endpoints that matches the find criteria, which means in the result of the find method there might be more than one endpoints. In this example I just returned the first matched one back. So in the client code we can created the channel factory from the endpoint and binding, and invoke to the service. When creating the client side channel factory we need to make sure that the client side binding should be the same as the service side. WCF discovery service can be used to find the endpoint for a service contract, but the binding is NOT included. This is because the binding was not in the WS-Discovery specification. In the next post I will demonstrate how to add the binding information into the discovery service. At that moment the client don’t need to create the binding by itself. Firstly start the discovery service, and then start our discoverable service. When it started it will announced to the discovery service and registered its endpoint into the repository, which is the local dictionary. And then start the client and type something. As you can see the client asked the discovery service for the endpoint and then establish the connection to the discoverable service. And more interesting, do NOT close the client console but terminate the discoverable service but press the enter key. This will make the service send the offline message to the discovery service. Then start the discoverable service again. Since we made it use a different address each time it started, currently it should be hosted on another address. If we enter something in the client we could see that it asked the discovery service and retrieve the new endpoint, and connect the the service.   Summary In this post I discussed the benefit of using the discovery service and the procedures of service announcement and probe. I also demonstrated how to leverage the WCF Discovery feature in WCF 4.0 to build a simple managed discovery service. For test purpose, in this example I used the in memory dictionary as the discovery endpoint metadata repository. And when finding I also just return the first matched endpoint back. I also hard coded the bindings between the discoverable service and the client. In next post I will show you how to solve the problem mentioned above, as well as some additional feature for production usage.
